South Korea is preparing to announce a major U.S. energy investment package valued at more than $100 billion to support American artificial intelligence infrastructure, according to people familiar with the matter cited by The Wall Street Journal.
The plan would see South Korea fund construction of up to eight nuclear power plants and a natural gas project. The investment follows a trade agreement reached by Trump and Lee Jae-myung last October, under which the U.S. lowered most tariffs from 25% to 15%, including tariffs affecting South Korea’s auto sector, while South Korea committed to invest $350 billion in the U.S. and buy an additional $100 billion in U.S. energy.
Two agreements are nearing completion and could be announced as early as next week, though negotiations are still ongoing and the investment details and timing could change.
