Solana’s second phase of the SIMD-0437 account rent reduction proposal went live on mainnet beta at epoch 1033. The parameter used to calculate the minimum rent-exempt account balance fell from 6,333 lamports per byte to 5,080 lamports, marking a cumulative decline of about 27% from the initial level and reducing the SOL required to keep accounts rent-exempt.
Anza said authorized users can recover excess SOL above the rent-exempt minimum from token accounts and token mint accounts through the WithdrawExcessLamports instruction, without closing the accounts or affecting token balances. No fixed schedule has been set for subsequent phases; the third phase will activate after on-chain state growth is confirmed to remain within a safe range, with SIMD-0438 available to reverse the changes if necessary.
