OpenAI CEO Sam Altman signaled that OpenAI and other leading AI companies may soon announce cooperation aimed at slowing AI development and jointly addressing safety risks.
Asked in a Fortune interview whether he would work with Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, SpaceX’s Elon Musk and Google’s Demis Hassabis on a safety plan, Altman said, “I think that will happen,” while declining to disclose private discussions.
The comments followed the resignation of Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon, who accused two companies of moving “full speed” toward self-improving superintelligence. An Anthropic alignment lead said the risk of AI causing human extinction within the next decade exceeds 10%. Altman said a 10% catastrophic risk is unacceptable and that frontier models need more progress in monitorability and alignment before advancing.
