Goldman Sachs attributes the recent sustained decline in gold prices to large-scale speculative liquidation rather than shifts in real interest rates. U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission data reveals that between October 20 and October 27, speculative traders net sold approximately $8 billion in gold positions, comprising $5.2 billion from long liquidations and $2.8 billion from new shorts. Since September 22, the gold market has experienced five consecutive weeks of net speculative outflows totaling $19.5 billion.
The analysis highlights that about 95% of the outflows during the week ending October 27 originated from "other traders" and non-reportable traders. As of October 27, these investors' long positions remained above the median level of the past two years, suggesting continued risk of further liquidation. Gold prices fell an additional 4.3% between October 27 and October 30, while put option bets and downside hedging demand increased notably, reflecting building short-term bearish sentiment.
