Ether.fi will completely decouple its staking token from the restaking protocol EigenLayer by the end of this quarter, removing all remaining structural links. Protocol documentation indicates that less than 1% of assets remained restaked as of August, with EigenPod withdrawal credentials scheduled for removal before year-end. The liquid staking platform previously integrated automatic restaking at launch in 2024 but separated it from weETH in August, converting it into a standard liquid staking token while directing users seeking restaking exposure to a separate Symbiotic-based product.
CEO Mike Silagadze cited unfavorable risk-reward dynamics as the primary driver for the exit, noting that restaking no longer offers meaningful yield opportunities. DefiLlama data highlights this disparity: while the restaking sector held $10.02 billion in TVL on September 8, it generated only approximately $100,000 in weekly fees. In contrast, liquid staking's $51.87 billion TVL produced $27.35 million in fees, delivering roughly 53 times more revenue per dollar secured compared to restaking.
The broader restaking sector has faced declining profitability following the conclusion of points programs in 2025 and the activation of slashing mechanisms in April. Among the six largest liquid staking protocols, combined gross profit fell to $953,000 in Q2 2026, down significantly from $2.18 million three quarters prior, underscoring the diminishing economic incentives for restaking integration.
