Zcash's original node software, zcashd, has officially retired after a decade of operation, as announced by ZODL founder Josh Swihart. The software reached its planned end-of-life at block height 3,417,100. Despite the retirement of zcashd, the Zcash network continues to operate seamlessly on modern Rust node implementations, Zebra and Zakura, with the Zallet wallet replacing the zcashd wallet.
Launched on October 28, 2016, zcashd was a fork of Bitcoin Core v0.11.2 and marked the first large-scale deployment of zk-SNARKs, pioneering the use of zero-knowledge cryptography on a public blockchain. Throughout its lifespan, zcashd facilitated every network upgrade in Zcash's history, from Sprout to Canopy, and was retired just before the Ironwood release.
