Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has raised concerns about the reliance of many Ethereum applications on Web2 infrastructure. Speaking at ETH Chiang Mai, Buterin introduced the "Walkaway Test," which evaluates whether a decentralized application (dapp) can function independently of its developers, servers, or centralized logins. He noted that many dapps still depend on Web2-style servers and logins, undermining true decentralization.
Buterin also addressed issues related to block builder centralization within Ethereum's infrastructure. He proposed FOCIL, a model for multi-participant block building, to mitigate builder censorship risks. This system would involve randomly selected attesters choosing transactions for inclusion in blocks, reducing the power of individual builders. Additionally, Buterin suggested encrypted transactions to combat toxic MEV practices like front-running and sandwich attacks, aiming to protect user transactions from exploitation.
