The US government is intensifying efforts to expand domestic rare earth production in response to China's near-total control over global supply. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced comprehensive measures to enhance the US's strategic mineral capabilities. This initiative follows executive orders signed in 2025 under the Trump administration, establishing the National Energy Dominance Council (NEDC) to expedite project timelines and site leasing. The Department of Energy has allocated $134 million to bolster domestic supply chains, while a White House initiative may impose tariffs on processed critical minerals if international agreements falter. The Sheep Creek deposit in Montana, with the highest-grade rare earth concentrations in the US, is a focal point of development, in collaboration with Idaho National Laboratory. These moves aim to reduce reliance on Chinese imports and strengthen US manufacturing sectors.
