A UK gang has been sentenced for stealing $5.4 million in cryptocurrency by impersonating police officers. The group created fake police websites and convinced crypto holders to transfer funds to 'safe accounts.' Hamza Bashir, 23, received a six-year and nine-month sentence, while Kevin Nwamma, 25, and Anthony Ikenwe, 29, were each sentenced to eleven years in prison.
The stolen funds were used to purchase luxury items, including a £60,000 car, vacations in Thailand and Japan, and goods from brands like Harrods, Hermès, Louis Vuitton, and Rolex. Police discovered £500,000 in cash in a safe and found that most of the stolen cryptocurrency had been converted into payment cards. The gang members also falsely reported their annual income, with one declaring only £444. The Metropolitan Police tracked down the gang after a victim reported the crime in January 2025.
