Tencent has officially disbanded its AI Lab, established in 2016, as part of a restructuring within its Technology Engineering Group (TEG). The AI Lab's personnel have been reassigned to the Hunyuan team, now under the leadership of Chief AI Scientist Yao Shunyu. Yao, a former OpenAI researcher, joined Tencent in December 2025 and reports directly to President Liu Chiping. The Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration Center remains operational, while the Multimodal Department now reports to TEG President Lu Shan.
Tencent announced during its March 18 earnings call that Yao Shunyu's HunYuan 3.0 is undergoing internal business testing, with a release expected in April. The AI Lab, led by figures such as Yao Xing and Jiang Jie, has contributed significantly to Tencent's advancements in decision intelligence, medical imaging, and protein structure prediction, with its technologies integrated into over 100 Tencent products, including WeChat and QQ.
