Spotify has removed over 500,000 fake streams from Malcolm Todd's song "Earrings" after an investigation revealed manipulation linked to prediction market betting. The song had unexpectedly topped the charts, driven by traders on the Kalshi platform betting on the most-streamed track in the U.S. for June, with $3 million in trading volume. Kalshi had prematurely declared Todd the winner based on manipulated data, settling bets before Spotify's findings. Following the discovery, Spotify requested Kalshi and Polymarket to remove its logo and clarify the absence of a partnership. Kalshi is cooperating with the investigation, while Polymarket has not responded. The incident, flagged by trader Caleb Davies, who lost $4,500, highlights concerns over economic incentives for manipulation in prediction markets. Spotify confirmed it will not pay royalties for the fake streams.
