Senator Elizabeth Warren has requested the US Commerce Department to clarify its handling of potential national security risks associated with Chinese crypto mining giant Bitmain. This follows reports of an ongoing investigation, "Operation Red Sunset," led by the US Department of Homeland Security, into whether Bitmain's ASIC machines could be used for espionage or to disrupt the US power grid. The probe, initiated last year, remains unresolved, with its current status unclear. Warren's letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick seeks documents and communications related to Bitmain, including any interactions with the Trump family, who are investors in American Bitcoin Corp., a company that recently acquired 16,000 Bitmain rigs. The investigation also follows halted shipments of Bitmain devices and scrutiny over a related Chinese chip firm linked to Huawei.
