Russian state-owned power company Rosseti is deploying AI technology to tackle illegal Bitcoin mining. The company is testing AI data analysis integrated into smart meters and portable detection devices to identify abnormal electricity usage, tampering, and suspicious load patterns. In collaboration with the Federal Security Service (FSB), Rosseti recently uncovered a major electricity theft case linked to Bitcoin mining, with losses exceeding $1.5 million. Among those arrested is Maxim Yatsun, son of former Russian presidential candidate Andrey Yatsun, accused of running large-scale mining operations by falsifying electricity consumption documents, leading to charges of large-scale fraud.
