A Russian hacker, Volkov, has been sentenced to 81 months in prison for his role in ransomware attacks that caused over $9 million in losses. The 26-year-old from Saint Petersburg operated as an initial access broker, infiltrating corporate networks and selling access to ransomware groups like Yanluowang. These groups used the access to encrypt victims' data and demand cryptocurrency ransoms, leading to actual losses exceeding $9 million and intended losses over $24 million.
Volkov was arrested by Italian police in November 2025 and extradited to the United States, where he pleaded guilty to six charges, including unlawful transfer of identity information, sale of access credentials, access device fraud, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to commit computer fraud, and conspiracy to launder money.
