Romania's National Office of Gambling (ONJN) has blacklisted the prediction market platform Polymarket for operating without a required gambling license. The ONJN classified the platform's activities as illegal gambling under Romanian law, which mandates a state-issued license for all operators. ONJN President Vlad-Cristian Soare clarified that the ban is based on legal compliance rather than technological aspects, cautioning against using blockchain to bypass regulations. During the May national elections, Romanian users reportedly wagered over $600 million on the presidential race and $15 million on Bucharest's local elections. The ONJN will coordinate with internet service providers to block access to Polymarket for Romanian users.
