A rare Casascius physical Bitcoin, valued at approximately $1.78 million, has been activated after 12 years of dormancy. The coin, which contained 25 BTC, was activated on Wednesday when its holographic security label was removed, allowing the transfer of the Bitcoin to a new wallet. Casascius coins, created by Mike Caldwell between 2011 and 2013, are known for their collectible value, combining the face value of Bitcoin with a collector's premium.
This activation is part of a recent trend of long-dormant Bitcoin addresses becoming active. Just yesterday, a wallet from 2011 moved 35 BTC after 15 years of inactivity. Casascius coins, which ceased production in late 2013, remain highly sought after in the collectibles market, especially those with intact holographic tags.
