Polygon has successfully activated the Rio upgrade on its mainnet, introducing a Validator-Elected Block Producer (VEBloP) model. This upgrade aims to eliminate chain reorganizations and enhance validator efficiency. As part of Polygon's 'gigagas' scaling roadmap, the Rio upgrade enables instant finality and boosts transaction processing speed to 5,000 transactions per second (TPS).
The upgrade also introduces stateless validation, which reduces hardware costs and promotes decentralization. These enhancements are detailed in three Polygon Improvement Proposals (PIPs) and are designed to position Polygon as a scalable infrastructure for global payments and real-world asset tokenization.
