OpenAI and Amazon have announced a significant multi-year strategic partnership, with Amazon committing to a $50 billion investment in OpenAI. The initial investment of $15 billion will be followed by an additional $35 billion, contingent on specific conditions. This collaboration will see the development of a stateful runtime environment powered by OpenAI models, accessible to AWS customers via Amazon Bedrock, expected to launch soon. As part of the agreement, AWS will become the exclusive third-party cloud distributor of the OpenAI Frontier platform, facilitating enterprises in building and managing AI agent teams. The partnership also expands their existing infrastructure agreement by $100 billion, extending it to eight years. OpenAI will utilize approximately 2 gigawatts of Trainium compute power through AWS, including future Trainium4 chips, starting in 2027. Additionally, the two companies will work on customized models for Amazon developers, enhancing Amazon's Nova series of models.
