Lightning Labs has introduced Wavelength, an alpha-stage toolkit designed to simplify Bitcoin payments for developers and AI agents. This new offering provides a non-custodial API that enables self-custodial Bitcoin payment functionality without the need for running nodes or managing liquidity. Wavelength supports both on-chain Bitcoin and Lightning Network payments, utilizing standard BOLT 11 invoices for interoperability.
The toolkit is currently available on Signet and testnet, with mainnet access restricted to invitations. It allows AI agents to interact via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling them to hold balances and pay for services in minimal units. While Wavelength initially supports Bitcoin, plans are in place to incorporate stablecoin support through Taproot Assets.
