Ethereum researchers have introduced a proof-of-concept for 'native Rollups' that directly verifies Layer 2 states at the Ethereum base layer. Utilizing the execution client Ethrex, the proposal involves an EXECUTE pre-compilation to implement EIP-8079, enabling Ethereum to replay and verify Layer 2 block state changes without relying on zero-knowledge or fraud proofs. This approach allows Ethereum to execute and confirm Rollup transactions' validity, using related contracts to manage Rollup state, bridge cross-layer messages, and verify withdrawals via Merkle-Patricia proofs. The concept aims to simplify long-term Layer 2 maintenance by inheriting Ethereum's security and upgrade features, though it remains in the exploratory stage.
