Ethereum is set to reduce slot and finality times incrementally, aiming for faster transaction processing and improved network efficiency. The proposed changes involve reducing slot times using a "sqrt(2) at a time" formula, potentially reaching as low as 2 seconds, while maintaining network security through optimized peer-to-peer (p2p) layers and erasure coding. The roadmap also includes transitioning to a one-round-finality BFT algorithm, which could decrease finality time from the current 16 minutes to as little as 6-16 seconds. This shift will be accompanied by a switch to post-quantum hash-based signatures and a STARK-friendly hash to enhance security. The changes are part of a broader strategy to make Ethereum's infrastructure quantum-resistant and more efficient, with a focus on maintaining network integrity even in the face of emerging quantum computing threats.
