Collaboration between Base and Ethereum on account abstraction standards EIP-8130 and EIP-8141 broke down last week, with both sides now moving forward on separate AA standards, Ethlabs researcher Derek Chiang said. Chiang said the EVM has long helped unify L1 and L2 ecosystems, and a shared AA standard could have supported consistent multichain smart account experiences, including future post-quantum accounts. He said L1 and L2 priorities are increasingly diverging, with agreement on gasless transactions and passkey wallets but significant differences over compliance requirements. Chiang said the absence of a unified standard may still allow both sides to innovate around their own visions. He outlined two possible paths: broader coordination over shared resources such as the EVM, or accepting fragmented standards while building wallets and applications that hide differences, expressing greater optimism for the latter.
