Echo Protocol is investigating a security breach on its Monad deployment after an attacker minted 1,000 eBTC, exploiting an admin-key compromise. On May 18, on-chain analysts detected the unauthorized minting, which led to the attacker borrowing approximately 11.3 WBTC (around $867K) and converting it to 385 ETH (about $821K) via Tornado Cash. The attacker initially retained 955 eBTC, which Echo later burned after regaining control of the admin keys.
The incident, attributed to a role-management compromise rather than a protocol bug, prompted Echo to suspend cross-chain transactions and Curvance to pause the affected eBTC market. Echo confirmed the loss at approximately $816K, consistent with the converted WBTC. This breach highlights vulnerabilities in bridge design and role management within DeFi, following recent similar incidents in the sector.
