Coinbase has announced a comprehensive plan to address the potential threats posed by quantum computing to current encryption systems. The company is upgrading its key management system, CoreKMS, which secures 99.9% of its custodial assets, and developing a post-quantum version, PQ-CoreKMS. An automated signing pipeline for post-quantum signature algorithms is expected within a year, with full multi-party computation capabilities to follow in 2-3 years.
Coinbase is also collaborating with Bitcoin developers and will co-host a post-quantum migration workshop with Stanford University in August. As part of its commitment to Bitcoin security, Coinbase has joined the Bitcoin Security Consortium, contributing funds, engineers, and open-source code.
