Igor Runets, CEO of Russian Bitcoin mining giant BitRiver, has been arrested on charges of tax evasion. Moscow's Zamoskvoretsky District Court documents reveal that Runets was detained on January 30 and charged with three counts of concealing assets to evade taxes on January 31. He has been sentenced to house arrest, effective February 4, pending appeal.
BitRiver, founded in 2017, is one of Russia's largest Bitcoin mining companies, with significant operations in Siberia. Runets, whose net worth was estimated at $230 million by the end of 2024, has faced numerous challenges since the U.S. Treasury sanctioned BitRiver in 2022, including halted partnerships and legal disputes.
