Bhutan is transitioning its self-sovereign identity system from Polygon to Ethereum, enabling its 800,000 residents to verify identities and access government services. The integration with Ethereum has been completed, with full migration expected by Q1 2026. The launch ceremony was attended by Ethereum Foundation President Aya Miyaguchi, co-founder Vitalik Buterin, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, and Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuk. Bhutan's identity system has been on Polygon since August 2024, after initially using Hyperledger Indy.
