Bhutan is transitioning its national identity system from Polygon to Ethereum, enabling nearly 800,000 residents to verify their identities and access government services. The integration with Ethereum is complete, with the migration of all resident credentials expected by Q1 2026. Ethereum Foundation Chair Aya Miyaguchi and co-founder Vitalik Buterin attended the launch ceremony with Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay and Crown Prince Jigme Namgyel Wangchuk. Miyaguchi highlighted this as the first national-level Ethereum identity system integration globally. Bhutan previously operated its identity system on Polygon since August 2024, and before that, on Hyperledger Indy.
