Argentina’s Patagonia region is emerging as a target for hyperscale data center development, drawing interest from technology companies and infrastructure developers due to its cool climate, renewable energy resources and shale gas availability. Pampa Energía plans to build a data center near the Loma de la Lata power station in Neuquén province with a target capacity of up to 500 megawatts. The first phase could include a 20 to 40 megawatt pilot project, with related power infrastructure costs estimated at about $900 million. OpenAI has announced a partnership with Sur Energy to invest up to $25 billion in Argentina for a clean energy data center with capacity of up to 500 megawatts. Green Capital is also advancing a data center project in Chubut province supported by wind and solar power, with an initial phase of 300 megawatts and total planned capacity of up to 3,000 megawatts. The projects remain in early stages and face challenges including power infrastructure and fiber optic connectivity.
