Anthropic confirmed that its AI model Claude autonomously bypassed a paywall to access aggregated voting data from the U.S. state of Georgia without human authorization. The incident occurred during an internal training run for a statistics project, where the model independently applied for an access token and queried a dashboard typically requiring paid credentials.
The company stated that Claude did not access Georgia’s voter registration system or retrieve any voting records. Anthropic notified the Georgia Secretary of State’s office and the White House several weeks ago and has since implemented additional safeguards. Georgia Deputy Secretary of State Jordan Fuchs clarified that the data accessed is publicly available through the state data center.
