South Korean prosecutors have indicted 13 individuals involved in a $1.3 million SpaceX-themed romance scam, utilizing cryptocurrency for money laundering. The Cambodia-based group allegedly created a fake SpaceX app and posed as "wealthy young women" to lure victims via chat apps. They claimed connections to Elon Musk to gain trust, leading victims to invest through the fraudulent app. The scam is part of a rising trend in South Korea, where citizens lost $73 million to romance scams in the first nine months of 2025, a significant increase from 2024. Authorities have identified 20 members of the ring, with seven still at large. Eleven suspects are in custody, while two have been released on bail. South Korean officials are working to recover the victims' funds and are considering stricter regulations to combat crypto-related crimes.
