AI startup Recursive has emerged from stealth mode, announcing a $650 million funding round to advance its self-improving AI technology. Founded by former DeepMind chief scientist Tim Rocktäschel, Recursive aims to enable AI systems to conduct their own experiments for self-optimization. The funding round, which was described as "severely oversubscribed," was led by GV (Google Ventures) and Greycroft, with participation from NVIDIA and AMD Ventures. The company is now valued at $4.65 billion.
Recursive's team includes over 25 members, many of whom have previously led research at prominent labs such as OpenAI, Meta, and Salesforce. The startup's approach is inspired by the concept that human intelligence results from an open-ended evolutionary process, suggesting that the path to superintelligence lies in automating scientific discovery rather than relying on manually designed AI algorithms.
