The Mayo Clinic has unveiled an AI model, REDMOD, capable of detecting pancreatic cancer up to three years before clinical diagnosis by analyzing routine CT scans. Published in the journal Gut, the study highlights REDMOD's ability to identify cancerous changes with a specificity of up to 88%, detecting the disease an average of 475 days earlier than traditional methods. This breakthrough addresses the challenge of early detection, which is crucial for improving survival rates.
REDMOD's accuracy in identifying cancer more than two years before diagnosis is 68%, significantly outperforming radiologists, who achieve only 23% accuracy. The Mayo Clinic is conducting a clinical study, AI-PACED, to integrate AI-guided screening into patient care. This development is part of a broader trend of AI advancements in cancer detection, with early detection being vital as pancreatic cancer is projected to become the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. by 2030.
