Jonathan Spalletta, a 36-year-old from Maryland, has been charged with stealing $54 million from Uranium Finance, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. Spalletta allegedly hacked the decentralized exchange twice in 2021, initially taking $1.4 million through deceptive smart contract transactions and later exploiting a vulnerability to steal an additional $53.3 million. The theft forced the exchange to shut down.
Prosecutors claim Spalletta laundered the stolen funds to purchase rare Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering cards, as well as a moon artifact. He faces charges of computer fraud and money laundering, with a potential maximum sentence of 30 years. Authorities have already recovered $31 million in crypto assets as of February 2025.
