XRP Ledger developers have proposed a new transaction type, SponsoredAccountCreate, that would allow blockchain accounts to be created with zero XRP balance. Submitted on October 15, the code proposal enables an existing account to sponsor a new one by covering its reserve requirement, eliminating the need for users or applications to lock up 1 XRP per wallet.
Currently, the XRP Ledger mandates a minimum reserve of 1 XRP for each active account to prevent network spam. This requirement poses significant overhead for payment applications and automated software—creating 100,000 separate accounts, for example, would require setting aside 100,000 XRP solely for reserves. Under the proposed system, sponsors absorb this cost while maintaining the network's overall reserve obligation intact. The mechanism could also extend to covering transaction fees on behalf of users.
The proposal aligns with Ripple's recent partnership with Stripe-owned Privy to embed wallets directly into XRP Ledger applications. That integration aims to support payments using both XRP and Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin, including automated transactions initiated by AI agents.
