Illinois has agreed to postpone its 0.2% digital asset tax for six months following negotiations between state officials and industry groups including The Digital Chamber and Illinois Blockchain Association. The delay, which still requires judicial approval, pushes the potential implementation date beyond January 1 as litigation over the measure continues.
The joint request for postponement is expected to be filed in Sangamon County circuit court, allowing both parties to bypass preliminary injunction hearings and proceed directly to arguments regarding the constitutionality and enforceability of the Digital Asset Tax Act. Approved in June, the tax targets crypto firms exceeding $100,000 in receipts from transaction activities and asset storage services.
