Hong Kong police reported receiving over 50 investment fraud cases in the past week, with total losses exceeding HK$30 million. Among the victims was a retired woman in her sixties who lost more than HK$4.5 million after being lured into a cryptocurrency scam by a man posing as a prospective tenant. The suspect initially contacted the victim through a property sales platform, claiming interest in renting her flat. He then presented himself as an investment expert and directed her to a fraudulent crypto investment website. The victim purchased USDT at physical cryptocurrency exchange shops on 20 occasions and transferred funds to a wallet controlled by the scammer under the guise of buying ETH. Early withdrawals were permitted to build trust, but when she attempted larger withdrawals, the scammer demanded approximately HK$7 million in additional USDT as "tax," revealing the scheme.
