E Weinan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chair Professor at Peking University, stated at the Guanghua Thought Leadership Forum that artificial intelligence will fundamentally democratize scientific research. Describing AI as essentially "mathematics plus computer engineering," he argued it will dramatically lower research barriers through open laboratories and cloud services, enabling any team or individual with ideas to participate in technological innovation. E Weinan predicted that "citizen scientists will become the main force of future research."
Addressing industrial challenges, E Weinan identified insufficient innovation capability as the root cause of corporate involution. While acknowledging constraints in high-end industrial software and CNC machine tool systems, he proposed building an AI-native industrial software system capable of benchmarking against or surpassing Siemens within one to two years. He distinguished between AI for Science and AI for Industry, estimating that industrial production line modeling could be achieved within three to five years.
The CAS academician also warned that the current scientific research system faces significant disruption, predicting a fundamental shift in research output from traditional academic papers toward intellectual property as the primary form of scholarly contribution.
