Canada’s financial regulator OSFI said tokenized deposits are not legally different from traditional deposits under the legal framework for federal financial institutions.
OSFI said it takes a technology-neutral stance toward financial innovation, with the legal nature of financial products and services determined by “what” they are rather than “how” they are delivered. Financial institutions and third parties must comply with existing laws, regulations, and guidelines including B-13 Technology and Cyber Risk Management and B-10 Third-Party Risk Management when launching tokenized or other digital deposit products.
