The Bank of Italy warned crypto-asset service providers that every crypto transfer must undergo sanctions screening, regardless of transaction size. Firms may not use minimum transaction thresholds to avoid automated screening.
The requirement stems from European Banking Authority guidelines that apply in Italy from December 30, 2025, and does not create new sanctions obligations. The central bank said certain instant payment exemptions for payment service providers do not apply to crypto transfers.
Crypto firms must review screening systems, sanctions list updates and alert procedures to ensure all applicable transactions are covered. MiCA authorization does not replace these separate obligations under EU restrictive measures rules.
