Zcash's development funding pool has swelled to an estimated $125 million net surplus, sparking intense community debate over how to manage the growing treasury. The fund, sustained by an 8% block reward allocation, continues to accumulate as ZEC price appreciation outpaces current spending needs.
Four distinct proposals have emerged targeting the mechanism: ending grants to the Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) program, eliminating the entire development fund allocation, or gradually reducing the allocation ratio to zero. Zcash co-founder and Tachyon lead Sean Bowe has drafted a proposal recommending that a future network upgrade terminate the 8% block reward currently directed to ZCG.
Supporters of reform argue the existing structure causes funds to pile up without direct accountability to coin holders. Opponents caution that cutting development funding without a replacement mechanism could jeopardize ongoing protocol maintenance and innovation. All proposals remain under active discussion with no final decisions reached.
