Open USD has launched a new stablecoin designed for banking, cross-border payments, and institutional settlement, backed by over $1 billion in committed liquidity from five founding partners. Coinbase, Mastercard, Shopify, Stripe, and Visa each hold equal equity stakes and will fund the initial liquidity pool over the coming months to support the digital dollar's infrastructure. The project distinguishes itself from Tether and Circle through an economic model that rewards partners driving supply and transaction activity. While Open Standard initially announced 140 partners including BlackRock and BNY, governance is now centralized among the five founders rather than operating as a consortium. Management maintains operational control while aligning the broader partner network through contribution-based incentives aimed at integrating stablecoins into traditional financial services.
