Sui vs Aptos Architecture and What Happens When Transactions Collide

Both chains have to decide what happens when two transactions touch the same data at the same moment, and they put that decision in different places. Sui puts it in the data model. Sui's object model documentation calls an object the fundamental unit of storage on the network. Each one carries a globally unique ID plus a version number that rises with every transaction that modifies it.

Ownership is the other half of the Sui object model. The docs sort objects into five ownership kinds, from address-owned objects that belong to a single account to shared objects that anyone can use. Consensus then orders the transactions. In benchmark testing, Sui's consensus documentation says its Mysticeti protocol reached commitment in about 0.5 seconds at a sustained 200,000 transactions per second.

Aptos settles the same question after the fact. Its execution docs describe Block-STM as a multi-threaded and in-memory engine that pairs software transactional memory with a collaborative scheduler. Transactions run speculatively in parallel, and when two of them collide the engine re-executes the later one. The committed result still has to match the block's preset consensus order. The docs also say developers don't declare access lists, so they write ordinary Move and the engine parallelizes whatever doesn't conflict.

So the builder's work lands in different places. On Sui you decide who owns what when you design the object. On Aptos you write the contract and let Block-STM find the collisions at run time, paying for each one with a re-execution.

Our guide to what Sui is as a Layer 1 focused on scalability walks through the object-centric design from the start.

The Move Programming Language on Sui and Aptos

The Move programming language came out of Meta's Diem project, and both chains write their smart contracts in it. Our profile of Mo Shaikh, the Aptos cofounder behind the Move blockchain traces how the language reached an independent network.

A shared language doesn't mean a shared virtual machine. Each chain runs its own, and that matters the day something breaks. When researchers found a type-confusion bug in the Aptos Move virtual machine, Aptos patched it before anyone exploited it, and Sui's separate machine was never exposed. How safe Aptos and Sui are after the Move flawcovers what the bug could have reached.

How Did the Aptos Price Get Ahead Before 18 September?

The Aptos price never closed below its 30 August level of 0.518 in this window, and it pulled ahead early. By 12 September, the halfway bar of the 26-bar window, APT was up 16.22 percent at 0.602 and SUI was up only 1.91 percent at 0.7246. APT then slipped to 0.548 on 15 September before the two bars that made its month. It gained 8.68 percent on 17 September. The 18 September bar added 21.46 percent to close at 0.730, the largest one-bar gain either token printed between 30 August and 25 September.

After that, APT's second leg was a grind with one sharp setback. It closed at 0.727 on 19 September and climbed to 0.831 on 22 September, then lost 9.27 percent on 23 September to 0.754 before finishing at 0.873.

Measured in log returns, APT had covered 66 percent of its whole window move by the 18 September close. SUI had covered 26 percent.

When Did the Sui Price Catch Up After 18 September?

The Sui price spent the first half of the window going nowhere. On 15 September SUI closed at 0.6864, which left it 3.46 percent below its 30 August close sixteen bars into the run. Three straight gains of 3.92 percent, 3.91 percent and 9.86 percent then carried it to 0.8143 by 18 September.

The second leg is where SUI made its month. It jumped 16.19 percent on 21 September to 1.0423, gave back 6.22 percent on 23 September and closed the window with a 17.88 percent bar to 1.195. Those seven bars from 18 to 25 September added 46.75 percent, more than twice APT's 19.59 percent over the same dates. Stretch the view to 30 bars from the 26 August close and the tie holds, with SUI up 55.76 percent and APT up 53.16 percent.

The cleanest way to see the order is the price of one token in the other. One SUI was worth 1.373 APT at the 30 August close, and that fell to 1.115 APT by 18 September as Aptos ran ahead. Sui's second leg took it straight back to 1.369 APT on 25 September, within a third of a percent of where the window began. A SUI holder keeping score in APT was down nearly a fifth on 18 September and back to level a week later.

The late burst didn't make SUI the wilder token day to day. Over the 30 bars to 25 September, the standard deviation of daily log returns was 5.58 percent for SUI and 5.85 percent for APT, so APT's first-leg jump was a bigger outlier inside a similar spread. For another Layer 1 pairing on a different measure, Sui vs NEAR on TVL per dollar runs the numbers on capital locked.

Method: closes are Phemex daily bars, SUI from the SUI / USDT perpetual and APT from the APT / USDT spot market, read on 26 September 2026. Each percentage is the later close divided by the earlier close, minus one.

Aptos vs Sui, and Which One Wins for Which Use

For a trader who wants a leveraged position on this pair, Sui wins. The SUI / USDT perpetual is live on Phemex at up to 50x with funding every eight hours, according to Phemex product data read on 26 September 2026. APT's perpetual is delisted, so APT trades on Phemex as spot only, on the APT / USDT market.

For a builder who wants to write contracts without mapping ownership up front, Aptos wins on its own docs' terms, since Block-STM takes ordinary Move and finds the conflicts itself. The Sui design asks for more thought at the start and gives a clearer picture of which objects a transaction can touch.

If you want the longer SUI levels, our SUI price forecast for 2026 to 2030 sets out the scenarios from an earlier starting point.

The specific risk in the Sui trade sits in its own tape. Two of SUI's seven second-leg bars were down days, and those two bars came straight after the 16.19 percent jump on 21 September. Together they took 7.95 percent off the close, so a position opened into a burst has already been tested once in this window.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Sui and Aptos prices move together?

Mostly, yes. The correlation of their daily log returns over the 30 bars to 25 September was 0.715, and the two closed in the same direction on 20 of the 26 bars from 31 August to 25 September.

When did Phemex list SUI and APT?

Phemex product data gives 3 May 2023 as the listing date for both the SUI / USDT perpetual and the SUI / USDT spot market. The APT / USDT spot market dates from 21 October 2022, and the now-delisted APT / USDT perpetual carries a listing time of 20 December 2022.

How fast can Sui's consensus go?

Sui's consensus documentation reports that in a controlled test with 50 nodes, Mysticeti handled 400,000 transactions per second before latency passed one second. With 10 nodes the same test reached 300,000 transactions per second.

Bottom Line

A 68 percent tie hides two very different trades on the same dates. Holding the leader in each leg, APT from 30 August to 18 September and SUI from 18 to 25 September, returned 106.81 percent. Holding the laggard in each leg, SUI first and APT second, returned 36.96 percent. The endpoints of a Sui vs Aptos comparison tell you almost nothing, and the order tells you nearly everything about who made money on the way.
