Why Did PEPE Jump 19.32% on 21 September and What Happened After Past Jumps

Key Points

Get a data-driven PEPE price analysis after its 19.32% jump on 21 September 2026, including trading stats, historical patterns, and contract details. Explore more.

PEPE jumped 19.32% on Monday 21 September 2026 and nothing changed at the token's own Ethereum contract. The whole board moved with it. 103 of the 124 Phemex perpetuals closed higher that session and Bitcoin added 6.71%, so PEPE was carrying beta, not news.

That 19.32% ranks second of the 124 perpetuals carrying a 21 September bar and a prior bar, and seventeenth of PEPE's own 999 session moves. Sixteen sessions were bigger. Pool what followed them and the precedent reads mildly bullish. Split those sixteen by date and the last seven turn it inside out.

Why Did PEPE Jump 19.32% on 21 September?

Monday 21 September was a green session for almost everything Phemex lists. 103 of the 124 perpetuals holding both an anchor bar and a prior bar closed higher. The median move across that population came to +3.43% and 17 names gained more than 10%. TAO led the board at +22.26% and PEPE came next.

So I went looking for a PEPE-specific reason and found none. The project's own site at pepe.vip carries a tokenomics page and a three-phase roadmap, and the footer under them states in plain English that there is no formal team or roadmap. The developers renounced contract ownership at launch and burned the liquidity pool tokens, so no governance action exists to announce and no treasury exists to spend. Our PEPE coin explainer covers that launch. A token that publishes nothing can't produce token-specific news, and that absence is the reason the next section matters.

That leaves the tape to explain the move. PEPE's 19.32% came in at 2.88 times Bitcoin's 6.71% on the same session, and Dogecoin managed 14.53% on its own bar. A high-beta name in a risk-on session does what PEPE did here, and that's the whole answer to the question in the headline.

What the 1000PEPE Perpetual Contract Actually Quotes

The Phemex chart for this market prints 0.0047674 and one PEPE cost $0.0000047674 on that close. The 1000PEPE perpetual contract quotes 1,000 PEPE per contract, so every level you read on it divides by 1,000 before it compares to a PEPE price anywhere else. The product record names the underlying as 1000 PEPE and the venue displays the market as 1000PEPE / USDT, while the URL spells it u1000PEPE-USDT.

So the anchor range of 0.003996 to 0.0051735 is really $0.000003996 to $0.0000051735 per token, and the 52-week high close of 0.0102157 is really $0.0000102157.

The trap is in the address bar. On 22 September 2026 I opened /futures/PEPE-USDT and it answered 200 with a page titled PEPE/USDT, and no PEPEUSDT perpetual exists in the Phemex product list at all. The market that exists is u1000PEPE-USDT. Type the obvious address and you get a page that looks right, with a set of numbers a thousand times larger than the PEPE price you came to check. If you want the mechanics of the instrument underneath that unit, how a perpetual futures contract works sets them out.

Do PEPE Trading Volume and Turnover Agree on Participation?

Two figures from the same bar tell different stories. Turnover on the anchor reached $6,497,193.88, which is 1.39 times the average of the twenty sessions running 1 to 20 September 2026. Base volume reached 1,457,960,517 contracts, only 1.11 times its own average across the same twenty. PEPE trading volume in contracts barely moved while the dollar figure jumped.

Method: turnover divided by base volume gives the average traded price of a bar. That came to 0.0044564 on the anchor against 0.0035517 across the prior twenty, a rise of 25.47%. Multiply 1.11 by 1.2547 and you get 1.39, which accounts for the entire gap between the two readings.

Base volume counts units changing hands, so base volume is the one that measures participation. Turnover counts dollars, and dollars rise when the price rises even if the same number of contracts trades. What crypto trading volume measures sets out the mechanic. The honest reading of this bar is an 11% lift in participation dressed as a 39% one.

Neither figure says anything about positions carried overnight, and open interest against volume is the distinction that matters there. The Phemex daily series doesn't store an open-interest column, so this page prints none. One more caveat belongs on the turnover figure. It is the Phemex book alone and never a market-wide number.

What Happened After the Sixteen Past PEPE Jumps This Size

Method: I took all 999 close-to-close moves in the Phemex series from 27 December 2023 to the anchor and kept the ones at least as large as 19.32%. Sixteen qualify and every one of them landed before the anchor bar. This PEPE price analysis then reads the close 10, 30 and 90 sessions after each of the sixteen.

Pooled, those sixteen give median forward returns of +14.66%, -2.20% and -5.15%. Ten of them closed higher after ten sessions, and a control drawn from the rest of the series beats that ten-session median in 0 of 50 runs.

Control protocol: fifty seeds numbered 1 to 50, with sixteen sessions drawn at random per seed. The population is every session holding a forward return at the horizon, 989 at ten sessions and 909 at ninety. The test is a one-sided upper tail against the observed median. At thirty and ninety sessions that control matched or beat the pooled medians 23 and 18 times out of 50, so only the ten-session number ever looked special.

Split the sixteen by date. Nine of them fall inside one cluster running 26 February to 21 May 2024, and their medians are +52.58%, +22.45% and +150.82%. That cluster is most of the sample and it is all of the bullish result.

The seven that landed after May 2024 read the other way entirely. Their medians are -1.29%, -15.71% and -25.04%, and none of the six holding a full ninety-session window closed higher. For that group I drew seven sessions per seed across the same fifty seeds, dropping to six draws at ninety because only six of the seven qualify. The control then matched or beat the later group 21 times at ten sessions, 45 at thirty and 44 at ninety. A random entry did better than these precedents nine times out of ten at the two longer horizons.

One of the seven is standing directly overhead. The 0.0047674 close is PEPE's highest daily close since 14 February 2026 and all 218 closes in between were lower. That 14 February bar was itself a 27.91% jump, and it handed back 19.20% over the ninety sessions that followed.

Does the PEPE Golden Cross Change the Read?

The PEPE golden cross printed on 19 September 2026, when the 50-day average rose above the 200-day two sessions before the anchor. Measured at that close, PEPE sits 41.47% over its 50-day moving average and 44.49% over the 200-day, with the two lines only 2.13% apart.

That cross is the third in the 1,000-bar series and the record behind it is thin. The golden cross and death cross explain the signal itself. The first printed on 13 November 2024 at a 0.0207679 close and price lost 53.87% over the ninety sessions after it. The second printed on 25 June 2025 at 0.0094570 and added 1.12% across the same horizon.

Look again at the date of that first cross.

13 November 2024 is also one of the seven later jumps in the precedent set, and at +46.61% it was the largest of them. A golden cross and a 46% session landed on the same bar, and ninety sessions later the position was down 53.87%. Two observations make no sample, so the one death cross in the series is the more useful entry. It printed on 2 October 2025 at 0.0102157, the highest close of the past 52 weeks.

Below the anchor your nearest average is the 20-session mean at 0.0036291, a level 23.88% under the close with nothing in between. Above it the 52-week window holds two closes. The nearer one is 0.0048330 from 14 February 2026 and the anchor finishes 1.38% under it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much leverage does Phemex offer on the 1000PEPE contract?

The product record lists a maximum of 50 times on u1000PEPEUSDT and a funding interval of 28,800 seconds, so funding settles three times a day. At the top risk limit of 1,225,000 the initial margin requirement reads 2%.

What is the total supply of PEPE?

The project tokenomics page prints 420,690,000,000,000 PEPE and states that the token carries no buy or sell tax. Nothing in the 21 September session changed either figure.

How far is PEPE from its highest Phemex close?

The highest daily close in the 1,000-bar series is 0.0265206 on 9 December 2024, which leaves the anchor 82.02% under it.

Where does PEPE stand for the year so far?

PEPE closed the 1 January 2026 bar at 0.0049223, so even after a 19.32% session the anchor finishes 3.15% lower across the year to date.

Bottom Line

Sixteen precedents looked like a reason to chase the breakout. Nine of them came from one spring in 2024 and they carried the entire positive number between them. Strip that spring out and seven jumps remain, they lost money at every horizon I tested, and a random draw beat them nine times in ten at the two longer ones. The pooled median pointed one way and the data underneath it pointed the other.

The level that decides the next leg is 0.0048330 from 14 February 2026, because it is the last thing standing between this close and clear air. The number to keep in your head is 1,000, because the chart you are reading quotes a thousand tokens at a time.
