Who Is Karl Floersch? Optimism Co-Founder, Ex-OP Labs CEO

Key Points

Karl Floersch co-founded Optimism and serves as OP Labs chief scientist. His login authored 58 of 2,542 main-repo commits in 2026 to late October.

Karl Floersch is the Optimism co-founder and OP Labs chief scientist who ended a 1,413-day gap in Optimism's main code repository, with his login authoring 58 commits in 2026 to late October. He took the OP Labs CEO post in May 2023, and a January 2026 release gives that title to Jing Wang.

Floersch's record in that repository splits into three stretches. The login authored 84 commits across 2020 and 2021 and one merge in January 2022. It logged none across 2023 and 2024, the years that hold his CEO appointment, and came back on 11 Dec 2025. The 58 commits of 2026 hold 40.28% of his 144 there to late October.

Karl Floersch's Career and Background

Karl Floersch came to crypto through peer-to-peer software, and podcast notes dated 1 Oct 2026 trace the path from WebRTC experiments to Consensys, where he worked on the decentralized music platform Ujo. He then moved to early proof-of-stake research at the Ethereum Foundation. His own site carries a short Ethereum explainer dated 25 Feb 2016, so he was writing about the chain by early 2016.

Floersch's login shows the proof-of-stake research in public. It authored 35 commits in Ethereum's Casper repositoryfrom 7 Mar 2017 to 6 Mar 2018, and his site holds the Plasma Cash Simple Spec, dated 14 Mar 2018.

That Plasma is Ethereum's old scaling design, a different thing from the stablecoin chain called Plasma and its XPL token.

The Karl Floersch Optimism story runs straight out of that research. Floersch's login authored 411 commits across the plasma-group organization from 13 Nov 2018 to 24 Sep 2020.

A Gitcoin case study dated 13 Feb 2026 describes Plasma Group as a small nonprofit research team that moved into Optimism in late 2019. The podcast notes say the effort to make Plasma support applications such as Uniswap helped produce the optimistic rollup design behind Optimism.

Uniswap's founder belongs in this story for a plainer reason. A talk listing dated 13 Jan 2025 says "Karl and Hayden first met in college", and our profile covers who Hayden Adams is and how he built Uniswap.

Floersch's about page describes the later years in his own words, as "trying to scale Ethereum technology and values with Optimism". It also mentions a blockchain course and book he was creating, called cryptoeconomics.study.

Who Founded Optimism?

Karl Floersch and Jing Wang founded Optimism by the account of a talk page dated 17 May 2024, which calls them "the cofounders of Optimism". The same page lists Wang as "the CEO and executive director at the Optimism Foundation" and Floersch as "the CEO of OP Labs", so each Optimism founder named here ran a different arm at that point.

This profile names those two because its sources credit them by name. The Gitcoin case study says the five-person Plasma Group team founded Optimism, so two names aren't a full roster of its founders.

Two bodies carry the name forward. OP Labs PBC is the company, and Optimism's governance FAQ describes the Optimism Foundation as "a Cayman Islands foundation company" whose board includes Wang. Readers new to the project can start with what Optimism crypto is and how the Layer 2 works. So the Optimism crypto founder question has two names on this page, and both people have held a CEO title.

Is Karl Floersch the CEO of OP Labs?

No, Karl Floersch held that job from 2023, and Jing Wang is the CEO of OP Labs on both 2026 pages here that name one.

The post came to Floersch on 31 May 2023, when Liam Horne wrote that Floersch "will assume the role of CEO of OP Labs" and moved himself to an advisory capacity. The talk listing of 13 Jan 2025 calls him "CEO of OP Labs" as well.

Then the OP Enterprise release of 30 Jan 2026 quotes Wang as "Co-Founder of Optimism and CEO of OP Labs", and a video page of 20 Aug 2026 gives her the same title. The podcast notes of 1 Oct 2026 settle Floersch's side of it, calling him "the Co-founder of Optimism and Chief Scientist at OP Labs".

The handover has no date on any of those five pages, so it falls somewhere between 13 Jan 2025 and 30 Jan 2026. This profile doesn't draw on X, LinkedIn or Optimism's blog, any of which could carry the date.

Any Karl Floersch OP Labs profile that still says CEO is out of date.

What Does OP Labs Do?

OP Labs runs blockchain infrastructure for companies that want their own chains, and Horne's 2023 post describes the same company doubling down on "protocol development and engineering". The OP Enterprise release calls OP Labs PBC "a blockchain infrastructure provider" that helps developers and enterprises launch their own networks and applications. Its mission page aims higher, at scaling "the world computer".

OP Enterprise launched in January 2026 with three tiers, and they differ by who runs the chain.

  • Fully Managed covers "full blockchain hosting and operational services".

  • Self Managed reads "you operate the blockchain, we support it".

  • OP Mainnet lets a team "start on a proven public network" and move to its own chain later.

Wang called it "a major focus for us in 2026" in that release, which also said Celo runs its network with OP Enterprise Mission-Critical Support. The release names Optimism's open-source OP Stack as the software behind that pitch, and our guide explains what Ethereum Layer 2 solutions are.

How Much Code Does Karl Floersch Write?

Karl Floersch's login authored 58 of the 2,542 commits in Optimism's main repository in 2026 to late October, after no commit between January 2022 and December 2025.

A commit isn't a measure of work, since reviews and private repositories don't show up in it. The count says which login authored a change and nothing about who typed it.

The 1,413-day gap runs from a merge on 28 Jan 2022 to the first commit back on 11 Dec 2025, and it holds Floersch's 31 May 2023 CEO post. That first commit is a service skeleton for a component called op-interop-filter. It lands inside the same window as the undated CEO handover, though nothing here ties the two together.

GitHub's commit search returns nothing for the login across Optimism's whole GitHub organization from February 2022 to November 2025. The login wasn't silent elsewhere, with 63 distinct commits in 2024 across three other public repositories.

Floersch's share fell from 22.03% of the repository's commits in 2020 to 2.28% in 2026 to late October, because everyone else's output grew far faster than his. The login still ranked 13th, tied, among 131 named non-bot authors over those months.

The subject lines show what those commits touch. Of his 58, 42 name interop or supernode (72.41%), against 258 of the other 2,484 (10.39%). Interop is the work of passing messages between chains, and the supernode lines refer to a component named op-supernode. The podcast notes list "interoperable chains" among three areas of Floersch's focus, and the commit record agrees on that one.

A trailer naming an AI tool as co-author sits on 35 of Floersch's 58 (60.34%), against 921 of the other 2,484 (37.08%). That trailer is a line of metadata, and it doesn't say how much of any change the tool wrote.

The last commit in this count, dated late October 2026, adds private chain config updates to SystemConfig at +556 / -8 lines.

Method: GitHub's public commit list for this login in the ethereum-optimism/optimism repository, counted to late October, with yearly totals and the 2026 subject lines from the repository's full list.

Why Does Karl Floersch Matter for OP?

OP is Optimism's governance token, so a co-founder's work reaches holders through votes and through the software those votes shape. Optimism's governance FAQ says OP holders can vote themselves or delegate that power to someone else.

Floersch's login isn't a price signal, and a commit count says nothing about where OP trades. It shows where the login's 2026 commits in the main repository went, mostly to interop and then to private chain configuration in late October 2026. That lines up with the institutional push the podcast notes describe, and for an OP holder that push is the bet to judge.

The wider question for Layer 2 tokens is survival, and our guide Are Ethereum Layer 2s Dying? maps the wind-downs announced in early October 2026.

OP closed late October at $0.1200 on CMC. On Phemex, the OPUSDT perpetual was delisted under a notice dated 5 Aug 2026. OP/USDT spot is on a notice dated 9 Oct 2026 that says the pair will come off at a later date. The link below opens Phemex's futures market. Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.
