tBTC (TBTC) is the bitcoin-backed token of Threshold Network, and its eight live bridge wallets held 1.03 BTC for each token in circulation at the late-October 2026 close. You deposit BTC with the bridge and mint the token on Ethereum. Threshold formed when Keep and NuCypher merged, and its own token is T.
The extra bitcoin has a paper trail. Of the 56 wallets the bridge registered from January 2023 to the late-October close, the eight live ones held a 128.94 BTC surplus that lines up with 129.07 BTC its redemption watchtower burned in five vetoes in March 2024. The coins behind those redemptions stayed in the bridge's wallets, which is why the backing runs above one for one.

What Is tBTC (TBTC)?
The token is an ERC-20 on Ethereum built to track bitcoin one for one. You send BTC to a bridge wallet, the bridge proves the deposit on Ethereum, and a vault mints the tokens to your Ethereum address after fees.
Free testnet coins also go by "tBTC", and they have no market value. Threshold's own FAQ says the peg rests on BTC reserves "verifiable onchain" and gives holders no direct governance rights, which run through T.
Where Bitcoin layer 2 projects build new chains to scale bitcoin, this bridge carries bitcoin's value to Ethereum and leaves the coins on Bitcoin itself.
What Is Threshold Network?
Threshold Network is the protocol that runs tBTC. Threshold's own explainer of the network says it "began as the first onchain merger between two decentralized networks, Keep and NuCypher".
NuCypher's side of that deal is covered in our guide to what NuCypher uses to protect your data. People who search threshold crypto mean this network or its token.
The threshold network token is T, whose contract went live on Ethereum on 31 December 2021, the same day as the two contracts that swap old KEEP and NU tokens into T. Threshold's docs say Threshold Labs has run the network since February 2025, under DAO proposals TIP-098 and TIP-100.
How Does tBTC Work?
Minting starts with a Bitcoin deposit of at least 0.01 BTC, the floor the bridge contract sets. Signers sweep deposits into the active wallet, the bridge checks a proof of that Bitcoin transaction on Ethereum, and the vault mints the tokens.
Redeeming runs the other way. You burn tBTC and name a Bitcoin address, and a bridge wallet sends the BTC there.
Both directions cost 0.2% under Threshold's bridge documentation, which says the mint fee was "reinstated on April 15, 2026". Holders who stake T can offset part or all of either fee.
The faster route is switched off. Attackers tried to mint the token without depositing bitcoin on 18 May 2026. The attempts failed. Threshold's May 2026 recap then said "Optimistic Minting has been paused until further notice", which stretched a typical mint from about 1.5 hours to six or seven. It was still paused at the late-October close.
Hemi, the Bitcoin layer-2 bridging DeFi takes another route, moving BTC through a chain of its own.
How Is tBTC Secured?
tBTC is secured by threshold signing, since every bridge wallet has 100 signer seats and moving its bitcoin takes 51 of them, according to Threshold's wallet-generation docs.
Those docs say each seat is filled at random by the operators' allowlist weighting and that new wallets come 14 days apart, yet the newest wallet at the late-October close dated from 3 May 2026.
What Is Threshold Cryptography?
Threshold cryptography spreads one secret across a group so that a set number of members must cooperate to use it. Threshold's guide to threshold cryptography explains that "the private key is shared among the individual, independent participants in the cluster", so no single machine can sign alone.
The bridge applies it to custody through threshold ECDSA, with each wallet's signers producing one Bitcoin signature together. Threshold's September 2026 recap said work continued on moving that signing to FROST, a Schnorr-based scheme.
How Much Bitcoin Backs tBTC?
The eight live tBTC bridge wallets held 4,238.85 BTC against 4,109.90 tBTC in circulation at the late-October close, about 103 BTC for every 100 tBTC. That's 3.14% more bitcoin than tokens, though Threshold's FAQ describes one-for-one reserves.
Nearly all of the 128.94 BTC surplus matches 129.07 BTC of redemption balances burned in full when five redemptions were vetoed in March 2024, while the veto penalty stood at 100%. The watchtower went live on 19 March 2024, and those five burns on 22 March 2024 are its only ones to the late-October close.
That 100% was the plan. TIP-072, the January 2024 proposal behind the watchtower called for "an initial 100% financial penalty on vetoed requests" and noted that for a stalled redemption "the corresponding tBTC was already burned at the time of the attempted redemption". With the token gone and the bridge balance burned, nothing was left to claim those coins, so they stayed in the wallets.
The proposal capped any later penalty at 5%, and a 5% penalty passed a Snapshot vote in April 2024. A governance proposal dated 29 September 2025 said it had been "never implemented (an oversight)", and the 5% rate took effect on 13 October 2025.
Method: the census takes all 56 wallets the Bridge contract registered from its January 2023 launch to the late-October close and rolls each Bitcoin balance back to the last Bitcoin block before that close. Every balance log of the bridge's Bank contract reconciles to those wallets, which held 4,238.97 BTC against 4,238.97 BTC of Bank balances and burned redemptions, 0.0011 BTC apart.
The 48 closed wallets held another 0.12 BTC of dust, which sat outside that surplus.
Threshold (T) Tokenomics
T's supply stood at 11.155 billion at the late-October close. Only the DAO's timelock can mint more, because the token's owner check rejects every other address, and that timelock waits at least two days before it executes a passed vote.
The two vending machines that convert old tokens held 1.016 billion T, 9.10% of supply, at 4.7832 T per KEEP and 3.2592 T per NU. On chain, they have no owner and no upgrade proxy, and the conversion docs say "there is no migration deadline". About 80.96 million KEEP and 192.81 million NU hadn't been converted, 8.61% and 13.96% of each token's convertible total.
The DAO treasury held 253.33 million T, or 2.27% of supply.
Staking for fee rebates held 258.12 million T from 45 stakers, 2.31% of supply, in a contract deployed in October 2025. Threshold's September 2026 recap says 100,000 T staked earns 0.001 tBTC of fee allowance per rolling 30 days. The contract is upgradeable, and a six-of-nine multisig that owns it can move stakes and has done so once. Unstaking takes 30 days.
Where Is the T Price at the Late-October Close?
T closed at $0.004613 on CoinMarketCap at the late-October close, 1.85% below the close a day earlier, which values its supply at $51.46 million.
CoinMarketCap's highest 2026 close to late October was $0.01020 on 13 January, and its lowest was $0.003244 on 18 August. T's late-October close sat 46.20% under its last 2025 close and 42.22% above that August low.
What Are the Risks of tBTC and Threshold Network?
Signers and owner keys. The coins sit in wallets that 51 of 100 signers control, and one six-of-nine multisig owns both the minting vault and the staking contract. The May 2026 attack failed, yet it kept optimistic minting off through the late-October close.
Concentrated T. One unlabelled address held 3.413 billion T at the late-October close, or 30.60% of supply. That's more than the treasury and both vending machines held together, in a DAO where T casts the votes.
Frozen exits. Under TIP-072, guardians can delay any redemption and veto it after three objections. Under the settings in force at the late-October close, a vetoed redemption loses 5% and waits 30 days for the rest.
Is Threshold Network a Good Investment?
The two tokens are different bets, and neither gets a forecast here. The bridge token follows bitcoin, so holding it adds bridge and signer risk to bitcoin's own swings, and its over-backing shows on chain.
T is the token people mean when they ask "is threshold crypto a good investment", and it fell hard in 2026 to late October. Its staking pays fee allowances, which the project's recap calls "a fee discount for active users, not passive yield".
For T to earn its keep, the bridge needs more mint and redeem traffic, since those fees are what staking discounts and what T holders vote on.
How to Buy tBTC (TBTC) Safely
tBTC has no perpetual or order-book spot pair on Phemex, so buying it means minting it or swapping for it on Ethereum.
-
Confirm the canonical contract on Ethereum (0x18084fbA666a33d37592fA2633fD49a74DD93a88) and check any token claiming the name against it.
-
Mint it from BTC in Threshold's own app, which its docs call the Threshold Unified Bitcoin Router, with a 0.01 BTC minimum and a 0.2% fee.
-
Or swap for it on a decentralized exchange using that contract address, and check the pool's depth before you confirm.
-
Hold it in a non-custodial wallet you control and note the Ethereum address you use.
-
Redeem through the same app for BTC at an address you name, paying 0.2%.
T's spot pair against USDT came off Phemex on 16 September 2026, and its T/USDT perpetual is delisted. Phemex's crypto futures cover other markets such as bitcoin. Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does tBTC stand for?
Threshold's own FAQ never spells the four letters out. It calls the token a decentralized wrapped bitcoin secured by threshold cryptography, and its docs call it tokenized Bitcoin.
What is the purpose of tBTC?
It lets bitcoin holders use BTC in Ethereum apps such as lending markets without handing their coins to a single custodian. A deposit mints the token and a redemption burns it for BTC, at 0.2% each way.
Is T crypto the same as tBTC?
No. T is Threshold Network's governance token, with 11.155 billion in supply in late October 2026, and its holders vote on fees and the treasury. The bridge token is a separate ERC-20 that tracks bitcoin.
What is the Threshold Network token price?
T closed at $0.004613 on CoinMarketCap at the late-October 2026 close, a market value of $51.46 million. CoinMarketCap's best close of 2026 to late October was $0.01020, set on 13 January.
Bottom Line
tBTC's backing is a number anyone can rebuild from the chain, and it comes out above one. The extra bitcoin is what a 100% veto penalty left behind, a penalty governance voted to cut to 5% in April 2024 and only cut in October 2025.
T's value rests on a thinner thread, because it needs bridge fees that the token's traffic has to earn while the faster mint path stays shut.
