ETHGas (GWEI) is the governance token of ETHGas, an Ethereum blockspace market, and 87.86% of its 10 billion supply sits in six locks. They open in mid-January 2027, but one wallet can cancel the four largest first. It's an ERC-20 token launched in January 2026, and it shares only its name with gwei, the unit Ethereum prices gas in.
ETHGas climbed near the top of CoinMarketCap's most-searched list in mid-October 2026, and Google's autocomplete finished "gwei token" with "unlocks". Four locks funded on launch day make 7.9 billion GWEI (79% of supply) releasable at once to a single wallet in mid-January 2027. That wallet also holds the admin role that can cancel those four locks, so it can take the tokens back at any time.

What Is ETHGas?
ETHGas runs a marketplace where Ethereum validators sell space in blocks before they build them, so a trader or an app can pay up front for guaranteed inclusion. The project calls the goal "realtime Ethereum", and GWEI is the token that governs it.
GWEI has a fixed supply of 10 billion and launched on 21 January 2026. ETHGas's tokenomics page calls it a governance token only and says holding it "is a commitment to operating and governing the protocol and is not a passive investment."
Most of the confusion around ETHGas crypto comes from the ticker. On Ethereum, gwei is a unit worth 0.000000001 ETH, and wallets quote gas prices in it. Phemex Academy's page on what Ethereum gas is and how it works covers that unit. ETHGas's own docs add to the mix-up by pricing blockspace in gwei the unit.
Why Is ETHGas Trending in October 2026?
ETHGas's blog has one October post, a mid-October recap of the team's conference trip through three Asian cities, and it says nothing about the token. Its docs carry no token news for October either, and the project's community Telegram channel last posted in September 2025. Two web searches for ETHGas news in October 2026 returned no dated event.
GWEI closed mid-October at $0.02128 on CoinMarketCap's daily data, 2.22% below the close the day before. That close was 88.33% under the mid-June closing high of $0.1823. It was also 43.26% above the early-August closing low of $0.01485, which put the price far nearer its floor than its peak.
The searches point at a calendar written into Ethereum contracts, where all six GWEI locks open within one week of each other. The two smallest go first, and the four big ones follow seven days later.
How Does ETHGas Work?
Blockchain validators take turns proposing Ethereum blocks, and ETHGas lets the next proposer sell space in its block ahead of time. The basic product is an inclusion preconfirmation, a validator's promise to put a buyer's transaction into a specific block. ETHGas's inclusion preconfirmation docs say a market in that blockspace opens only after the validator makes the first sale, so no one can short it.
A buyer can also take a whole block of about 36 million gas units, along with the right to order the transactions inside. ETHGas takes 5% of each first sale and lists a 0.3% fee on resales that it still marks as to be confirmed.
Two more products remain promises, and the docs estimate both for the second half of 2026. Execution preconfirmations would add a guaranteed result to the inclusion promise. Base-fee futures would let traders go long or short the fee Ethereum burns under EIP-1559, the 2021 fee overhaul, with settlement in cash.
GWEI's role is governance. Holders lock it for one week to four years and get veGWEI, a voting balance that can't be transferred and carries more weight the longer the lock runs. The design follows the veToken model of decentralized governance that other DeFi protocols use, and its holders vote on fees and treasury spending.
Is ETHGas Legit?
ETHGas is a project with working products and a plain token contract, and its weak spot is the control one wallet keeps over most of the locked supply.
In April 2026, ether.fi agreed to commit about 40% of its ETH holdings to ETHGas's staking service for three years. The joint announcement valued that stake at $3 billion and tied it to ongoing performance thresholds.
The token contract is clean. Its verified code is a standard ERC-20 that minted the whole supply once at deployment, with no owner, no mint function and no way to pause or blacklist wallets.
The locks tell a different story. One wallet with no contract code received all 10 billion GWEI at minting, funded the four launch-day locks and is named as their beneficiary. It also holds the admin role in ETHGas's access-control contract.
The lock contract's verified code lets an admin cancel any lock its beneficiary hasn't accepted and take the whole balance, and that wallet hasn't accepted any of the four. So it can pull 7.9 billion GWEI back out whenever it chooses, though none of the four locks has sent a single token since funding.
Method: calls to the token, the six locks and the access-control contract on Ethereum in mid-October 2026, with the cancel and release calls simulated read-only from that wallet. Ethplorer's independent index shows the same six lock balances and no transfer out of any lock.
GWEI Tokenomics
ETHGas's tokenomics page splits the 10 billion GWEI six ways and gives each slice its own schedule.
Allocation | Share of supply | Schedule in the docs |
Ecosystem | 31% | 7.15% of supply at launch, the rest over 10 years |
Investors | 27% | 10% at a one-year cliff, then two years linear |
Team | 22% | 10% at a one-year cliff, then two years linear |
Community | 10% | 2.5% of supply at launch, the rest over four years |
Foundation | 8% | 7.7% of supply at launch |
Advisors | 2% | 10% at a one-year cliff, then two years linear |
Six lock contracts hold 8.786 billion GWEI on chain, and they follow a different plan.
Lock balance (GWEI) | Opens | Cancellable before then? |
2.7 billion | Mid-January 2027 | Yes, by the admin role |
2.4 billion | Mid-January 2027 | Yes, by the admin role |
2.2 billion | Mid-January 2027 | Yes, by the admin role |
600 million | Mid-January 2027 | Yes, by the admin role |
586 million | Mid-January 2027, a week earlier | No |
300 million | Mid-January 2027, a week earlier | No |
The four launch-day locks open on the first anniversary of the launch, the same date as the docs' one-year cliff for investors, team and advisors. The amount doesn't match. The docs promise 10% at the cliff and a two-year linear vest after it, while each of those locks releases its entire balance at once.
Two of the balances equal the docs' rows in size, 2.7 billion for the investors' 27% and 2.2 billion for the team's 22%. Phemex Academy's primer on how crypto vesting and cliffs work explains both terms, and the gap here is between a 10% release and a 100% one.
The two later locks were funded in late August and early September 2026 by their own beneficiaries. Their code marks them non-revocable, and both have been accepted, which rules out a cancel. That leaves 886 million GWEI, 8.86% of supply, that no one can move before mid-January 2027.
CoinMarketCap counts 1.75 billion GWEI as circulating, the same figure on every daily row from launch to the mid-October close. That's one tracker's number. On chain, 1.214 billion GWEI (12.14% of supply) is held outside the six locks.
How to Buy GWEI Safely
Phemex has no live perpetual or spot market for GWEI, so the checks below apply to any venue that lists it.
Match the Ethereum contract, 0x2798b1cC5A993085E8A9D46e80499F1B63f42204, against the address on ETHGas's tokenomics page.
On BNB Chain, the same page lists a bridged GWEI at 0x30117E4bC17d7B044194b76A38365C53b72F7D49, so treat any other contract using the name as a copy.
Keep the token and the unit apart, because a gas tracker's reading "in gwei" is a fee level and says nothing about the GWEI token's price.
Remember that Phemex delisted its GWEIUSDT perpetual in May 2026 and its GWEI/USDT spot pair in September 2026, when it also closed GWEI deposits and withdrawals.
Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.
What Are the Risks of ETHGas?
The Mid-January 2027 Release
If the locks stay intact, all 8.786 billion GWEI in them becomes releasable in mid-January 2027, 5.02 times the 1.75 billion CoinMarketCap counts as circulating and 7.24 times the GWEI held outside the locks. The date is fixed in code, and a release hands the owners of those balances the choice to move them.
One Wallet Holds Both Keys
Because the beneficiary and the admin are the same address, the 79% of supply in the four launch-day locks stays locked only as long as that wallet wants it to. Cancelling takes one transaction per lock, and the code gives other holders no notice period before it lands.
A 91% Fall From the Late-June High
GWEI closed mid-October 91.46% under $0.2491, its highest intraday price in CoinMarketCap's daily record, set in late June 2026. The close was also 19.46% under the $0.02642 first daily close in January 2026, so a buyer at that first close who held on is under water.
Is ETHGas a Good Investment?
ETHGas's docs set the terms themselves. They say GWEI gives no right to revenue or fees, and they describe holding it as a commitment to governing the protocol.
What would have to be true: the blockspace market would need to draw steady fee volume from validators and buyers, and the two promised products would need to ship. The 7.9 billion GWEI that one wallet controls would also need to stay put through mid-January 2027 and after it.
What the dated data shows: a token 88% below its mid-June closing high, two of four products still unshipped, and a lock schedule that one address can cut short.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is GWEI token?
GWEI is the governance token of ETHGas, an Ethereum market where validators sell guaranteed block space ahead of time. Its supply is fixed at 10 billion tokens on Ethereum. It isn't gwei, the gas-price unit worth 0.000000001 ETH that wallets quote fees in.
Is GWEI a good investment?
The record so far makes it a high-risk bet. GWEI closed mid-October 2026 at $0.02128, 88.33% under its mid-June closing high. Its docs call holding it a commitment to governance, and one wallet can cancel the locks on 79% of its supply.
When are the next GWEI token unlocks?
The next lock releases come in mid-January 2027. Two locks holding 886 million GWEI open first, and a week later four launch-day locks make 7.9 billion GWEI releasable to one wallet. No lock releases GWEI before then, but one wallet can cancel the four launch-day locks.
Can you buy GWEI on Phemex?
Not any more, since Phemex ended GWEIUSDT perpetual trading in May 2026 and removed the GWEI/USDT spot pair in September 2026. GWEI deposits and withdrawals closed with the spot pair, and the ETHGas price page on Phemex still tracks the token.
Bottom Line
GWEI's lock calendar looks like one fixed cliff in mid-January 2027, yet for 79% of the supply the deciding date is whenever a single wallet acts. Only 886 million GWEI is bound by code to wait. A buyer of GWEI is relying on that wallet's choices as much as on Ethereum's appetite for guaranteed blockspace.
