Lido DAO (LDO) is the governance token of Lido, Ethereum's largest liquid-staking protocol, and it rose 7.55% in one mid-October 2026 day with no help from Lido's own buyback. Lido stakes about 9.68 million ETH for its depositors, and LDO holders vote on how the protocol runs and spends its fees.
The gain lifted Phemex's LDO perpetual from 0.4025 to 0.4329, the fourth-largest rise among 135 Phemex perpetuals that day, after a 9.57% drop the day before. In the week to that close, Lido's treasury earned fees at a $36.60 million yearly pace, under the $40 million its buyback must clear first.

What Is Lido DAO?
Lido DAO is the organization that runs Lido, and LDO is the token its members vote with. Lido's documentation on the DAO says LDO holders set the protocol's fees and pick its node operators, with votes weighted by the LDO each holder owns.
LDO crypto is easy to confuse with stETH, the token Lido hands a depositor for every ETH staked through it. A stETH balance grows with Ethereum staking rewards, while LDO earns none and trades on what the market thinks Lido's votes and treasury are worth.
Searches for Lido crypto also catch namesakes, since a lido is a public pool or beach and LDO is the Milan ticker of Leonardo, the Italian defense group.
Lido holds the largest deposit base of any liquid-staking protocol on Ethereum. Phemex's analysis of Ethereum staking hitting 30% of supply explains why that much locked ETH matters for the wider market.
In early October 2026, BitGo Bank & Trust extended Lido staking to eligible US clients, who can stake ETH and keep the resulting stETH inside their BitGo accounts.
Why Is Lido DAO Trending in October 2026?
Lido DAO is trending because LDO swung hard on back-to-back days in mid-October 2026. Its Phemex perpetual fell 9.57% to 0.4025 and then rose 7.55% to close at 0.4329, so the two days together still left it 2.74% lower.
LDO moved with the DeFi tokens around it. UNI fell 10.29% on Phemex on the first day and gained 8.18% on the second. ETH dropped 3.54% and then rose 2.09%, a smaller swing both ways. ONDO and JUP kept falling on the second day. A sector bounce explains the move better than anything Lido did.
Lido gave the market no news to trade. Its blog posted nothing between the BitGo announcement and the move, and its Snapshot space hasn't held a vote since September 2026.
LDO's July 2026 jump had a scheduled trigger, covered in why LDO surged then cooled on Staking Router v3, and this move had none.
The bounce had no buyback behind it either. In the seven daily oracle reports up to the mid-October close, Lido's treasury collected 281.1 stETH in fees, between 39.68 and 40.53 a day. That's about 14,660 ETH a year, or $36.60 million at ETH's $2,497 mid-October close, short of the $40 million baseline NEST has to beat before it adds to its buying balance.
Lido's fees cover that baseline only with ETH above about $2,729, which is 9.29% over the mid-October close. Every day under that line deepens a deficit that stood at about $542,500 at the end of September, according to a proposal on Lido's research forum. NEST can't buy until surplus days pay that deficit off.
Method: the fee is the change in the treasury's share balance across each daily oracle report, priced at that report's share rate, then scaled to a year and valued at Phemex's mid-October ETH close. A second route through Lido's reward rate lands within 1% of the same total.
What Does LDO Crypto Do?
LDO crypto gives its holders a vote on how Lido runs, and that vote is all the token does by itself. In August 2026, LDO holders named a new director to the Lido Alliance BORG Foundation, a vote Phemex covered in why Lido voted Bryce Howarth in unanimously.
Lido keeps 10% of the staking rewards its validators earn. At the mid-October close its staking router gave 6.11% of rewards to the DAO treasury and 3.89% to the four staking modules that pay node operators.
Lido's staking router documentation says each module's operator fee and treasury fee must add up to the same total, so adding modules can't push the overall cut higher.
Since August 2026, part of that treasury share can flow back into LDO through NEST, an automated buyback that spends surplus fees on the token.
How Does Lido Work?
Lido staking starts when you send ETH to the Lido contract and get the same amount of stETH, and Lido routes that ETH to node operators' validators.
Once a day an oracle report updates Lido's validator balances on chain. Every holder's balance then grows by that day's rewards after Lido's 10% fee, which worked out to about 2.2% a year over the week to the mid-October close. Holders don't claim anything, because the tokens in their wallets simply increase.
The pool shrank a little in that week. The Lido contract documentation covers the stETH contract, which held 9.68 million ETH at the mid-October close, down 0.996% from 9.78 million a week earlier. The same contract counts 502,244 initial validator deposits since Lido launched, a lifetime total that includes validators that have since exited.
LDO Tokenomics
LDO's supply stood at exactly 1 billion tokens at the mid-October close, and the DAO's own treasury held 121.5 million of them, 12.15% of the total.
Lido's NEST overview sets the buyback's rules. NEST compares the DAO's share of staking revenue with a $40 million annualized baseline, about $109,600 a day, and adds half of any surplus to a running balance.
While that balance is positive, it buys LDO through CoW Swap within caps of $50,000 a day and $10 million over any rolling year. The tokens go to the DAO treasury.
The balance carries forward, so shortfalls count as well. On a day when revenue misses the baseline, half the gap comes off the balance, and buying waits until surplus days restore it.
That makes NEST stricter than Aave's engine, which spends a fixed share of revenue and which Phemex covered in why Aave is surging on its new automated buyback engine.
A Lido buyback fix is already on the table. The forum proposal asks the DAO to cut the 2027 Foundations budget to about $30 million, roughly 30% below the current $43.8 million. It also asks for NEST's threshold to match whatever budget the DAO approves.
A reply in the thread backed tying the threshold to the budget in the 2027 grant request and left the size of any cut to budget planning.
How to Buy LDO Safely
Phemex lists LDO as a USDT-settled perpetual, back on the platform since late September 2026, with up to 50x leverage and funding every 8 hours. Phemex has ended margin trading on the LDO/USDT spot pair and will delist that pair at a later date, so the perpetual is the market to use.
-
Check the contract first, because Ethereum LDO lives at 0x5A98FcBEA516Cf06857215779Fd812CA3beF1B32 and its total supply reads exactly 1 billion.
-
Keep stETH and LDO apart in every order, because stETH tracks staked ETH and LDO is a separate governance token with its own price.
-
Size the position before you open the LDO perpetual on Phemex. Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.
-
Use limit orders on fast days, since LDO moved more than 7% in each direction on back-to-back days in mid-October and a market order can fill well away from the last trade.
-
Budget for funding while you hold, since the perpetual settles funding every 8 hours and a position kept open for a week pays or receives it 21 times.
What Are the Risks of Lido DAO?
-
A buyback that can stay idle for a long time. At October's fee pace NEST needs ETH above about $2,729 just to stop its deficit growing. It then has to earn back more than $540,000 before it buys a single token.
-
A treasury that owns 12.15% of supply. The DAO's 121.5 million LDO can fund grants and contributor pay, and NEST's purchases land in that same treasury. The forum thread records no specific plan for the LDO that NEST buys.
-
A pool that can shrink. Lido's pooled ETH fell about 1% in the week to the mid-October close. Less staked ETH means smaller rewards, and the DAO's 6.11% share shrinks with them.
-
A market that has been delisted once. Phemex delisted the LDO perpetual in August 2026 before listing it again in late September. The spot pair is due to follow its margin market off the platform on a date Phemex hasn't set.
Is Lido DAO a Good Investment?
LDO pays its holders nothing directly, so Lido DAO works as an investment only if Lido's fees start buying LDO or its votes gain a price of their own. Neither had happened by the mid-October close, and the two levers that could change it are ETH's price and the size of the 2027 budget.
The data shows the largest liquid-staking pool on Ethereum and a protocol fee that can't drift above its set total. It also shows a buyback with no purchases in its first two months. Phemex's Lido price prediction for 2026 to 2030 carries the price ranges for LDO.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Lido DAO falling?
LDO lost 9.57% on Phemex in one mid-October 2026 day as DeFi tokens dropped together, then won back most of it the next day. Lido's fees also ran below the level its NEST buyback needs, so no buying supported the price.
Is Lido DAO a good investment?
LDO earns no staking rewards, so its value depends on governance and on NEST turning Lido's fees into LDO purchases. NEST had bought nothing by mid-October 2026, and its balance only grows with ETH above about $2,729 at October's fee pace.
Does Lido have a buyback?
Yes. NEST has been live since 10 August 2026 and spends half of any staking revenue above a $40 million yearly baseline on LDO, capped at $50,000 a day. A deficit built up in its first two months has kept it from buying any LDO.
Is LDO the same as stETH?
No. stETH is the token Lido gives for staked ETH, and its balance grows with staking rewards. LDO is a separate governance token with a supply of 1 billion, and it earns nothing from staking.
Bottom Line
LDO's mid-October bounce came from a DeFi rebound, and the mechanism meant to tie the token to Lido's revenue had sat idle under its own rules since August. Until ETH climbs well past its mid-October level or the 2027 budget lowers the bar, LDO holders own a vote on fees that buy them nothing.
