What Is Gram Wallet and How Is It Different From the Custodial Wallet in Telegram?

Key Points

Discover how Gram Wallet brings true self-custody to Telegram, what sets it apart from Crypto Wallet, and why it matters for your coins. Learn more now!

Gram Wallet is the self-custodial crypto wallet inside Telegram, and Pavel Durov said on 31 August 2026 it was available to a limited set of users, Crowdfund Insider reported. You hold its keys. The older custodial option inside Telegram is Crypto Wallet in the @wallet app, where a company separate from Telegram keeps your private keys for you.

The trap is the name. Telegram's own site still hosts terms for a "Grams Wallet", last updated on 8 October 2019 for a token a US court later barred from delivery. And the custodial wallet inside Telegram, Crypto Wallet, says it isn't affiliated with Telegram Messenger. The chart sets a second trap, since GRAM's perpetual rose 11.11% to 1.62 on 26 September with no dated wallet news behind it.

What Is Gram Wallet and Who Holds the Keys?

Gram Wallet runs inside the Telegram app, and Crowdfund Insider's 1 September report says it needs no separate bot, mini-app or download. Durov had previewed it in July as the largest self-custody rollout ever attempted, and his 31 August statement said access would widen over the following couple of weeks.

In the report's words, account holders "keep control of their own keys" in Gram Wallet. That puts recovery on you, because there's no custodian to reset access if you lose them. The same report named recovery as one of the things the rollout would test.

Durov also thanked TON's validators for approving the smart contract that runs the wallet. He said that approval should let Telegram upgrade the wallet later without forcing people to move funds into a new contract.

His earlier comments pointed to instant transfers with no user-facing fee. As of that report, Telegram hadn't published which assets the wallet would support at every stage or how it would cover network costs. So the zero-fee line is Durov's description, and Telegram's own site carries no fee schedule to check it against.

How Is Gram Wallet Different From the Custodial Crypto Wallet in Telegram?

The @wallet app holds two services with opposite custody models. Crypto Wallet's help center, last updated on 19 August 2026, says the custodial one stores the private keys for your account and names its operator as TG Wallet Inc. of Panama. It also calls Crypto Wallet "an independent service" that "is not affiliated to Telegram Messenger."

Gram Wallet differs on both points, because it's built into the messenger and the keys stay with you. Crypto Wallet's custody is also why its transfers between Telegram contacts cost nothing. The help center says transfers between its users stay off the blockchain as entries in the service's own records. Withdrawals to outside addresses go on-chain and pay network fees.

Addresses work differently too. Crypto Wallet generates your deposit addresses once and won't let you replace them or link an outside wallet. So a Crypto Wallet deposit address and a Gram Wallet address are separate accounts, even when both hold GRAM.

Self-custody inside Telegram isn't new, either. The other @wallet service is DeFi Account, and the help center's own comparison says that with it "you control your private keys and account access yourself."

What Gram Wallet changes is the host. Crowdfund Insider describes it as built into the messenger itself, while the help center calls DeFi Account a third-party service.

Which Gram Wallet Did Durov Announce?

A page with a near-identical name lives on Telegram's own site, and it has nothing to do with the 2026 product. Telegram's Grams Wallet terms cover a wallet for "Grams" on what they call the TON Blockchain, offered by Telegram FZ-LLC. Clause 4.1 says Telegram doesn't access or store users' private keys, so even the 2019 design left the keys with users.

Those Grams never reached their buyers. The SEC sued on 11 October 2019, three days after that page's last update, over the sale of about 2.9 billion Grams to 171 initial purchasers. A federal court barred their delivery on 24 March 2020. In its June 2020 settlement release, the SEC said Telegram agreed to return more than $1.2 billion to investors.

Our profile of Pavel Durov and the failed Telegram ICO tells the rest of that story. One line from that period matters here. Telegram's public notice of 6 January 2020 said its wallet would launch as a stand-alone app outside Telegram Messenger, with integration left for later. Gram Wallet takes that later step six years on.

The name also shows up on software outside the messenger. On 27 September 2026 a web wallet at wallet.ton.org carried the Gram Wallet title. TON's developer documentation describes that site as a self-custodial web app that needs no installation. Google Play lists a Gram Wallet app from My Wallet Apps Ltd., and its listing describes the app as created in collaboration with Telegram.

Telegram's own site lists neither. Its applications page names only the messenger's clients, and the Telegram blog carried no Gram Wallet post through 27 September 2026. So a gram wallet apk, a gram wallet extension or a web wallet is a separate choice from the wallet Durov described inside Telegram. Treat each one as its own software and check who publishes it before you type a recovery phrase into it.

Is GRAM the Same Coin as Toncoin?

Yes. On 15 June 2026 the native coin of The Open Network (TON) changed its name from Toncoin to Gram and its ticker from TON to GRAM.

Crypto Wallet's help center says only the coin's name, ticker and logo changed, and the blockchain itself keeps the TON name. Balances switched automatically at the same address, so 10 TON became 10 GRAM with no swap, no migration and no new issuance. That's why the same page warns that any offer to "swap TON for GRAM" or "activate GRAM" is a scam.

Telegram has moved closer to the chain as well. Durov said on 4 May 2026 that Telegram was taking over as TON's driving force and running the network's largest validator. Telegram's 2020 notice had ruled out that role on its own planned chain.

Did the Gram Wallet Rollout Move the GRAM Price?

Crowdfund Insider reported that GRAM rose after the limited release, and Phemex's own daily closes show how briefly. The GRAM perpetual closed the 31 August bar 4.12% higher, at 1.391 from 1.336. The next bar gave all of it back, falling 5.32% to 1.317 on 1 September.

Across the 82 daily moves since the contract listed in July, that wallet-day gain ranks only fifth. The largest came on 26 September, ahead of 21 July (8.18%) and 21 August (6.79%). We found no wallet or GRAM announcement dated 26 September, and Telegram's blog has no post after 25 August. Turnover on that bar still reached $1.53 million, 2.25 times the median of the 30 bars ending that day. Heavy trading with no dated cause is exactly the kind of bar traders like to pin on the wallet.

GRAM rose 21.26% from its 30 August close of 1.336, the last before Durov's statement, to the 26 September close. In that stretch, 18 of the 27 daily bars closed higher. The final seven bars did most of the work, lifting GRAM 17.39% from 1.380 on 19 September.

Method: every percentage in this section is a change between two UTC daily closes of Phemex's GRAMUSDT perpetual, and the turnover figures are the USD turnover of its daily bars, across all 83 daily bars from its listing through 26 September 2026.

How Do You Trade GRAM Futures on Phemex?

Phemex lists GRAM as a USDT-margined perpetual that opened for trading on 6 July 2026 at 11:30 UTC. The contract takes leverage up to 20x and settles funding every four hours, so a position held for a full day passes six funding settlements.

Leverage is where the wallet story bites. At 20x, a 5% move against you equals your whole margin before fees, and the 1 September bar alone fell further than that. A 20x long opened at the 31 August close would not have survived to the 1 September close.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the custodial Crypto Wallet in Telegram require identity checks?

Yes. Its help center says new accounts go through identification and verification before use. The service can also hold an existing account under an extra review for up to 12 hours. It can ask for documents such as proof of address or the source of your funds.

Where is Telegram's custodial Crypto Wallet not available to users?

Its help center lists the United States and its territories among the places it doesn't serve, along with the United Kingdom. The same list covers 23 of the 27 EU member states. Germany and Italy are among the four it leaves out.

What happened to the Grams that Telegram sold to early buyers?

Beyond returning the money, the SEC's settlement ordered Telegram to pay an $18.5 million civil penalty. It also required Telegram to notify SEC staff for three years before taking part in any new digital asset issuance.

Final Thoughts

Telegram has launched Gram Wallet without a page of its own on its website, so the name travels further than the facts. A 2019 terms file, third-party app listings and scam offers to "activate GRAM" all use nearly the same words. Custody settles it. A product that holds your keys isn't Gram Wallet, and one that needs a download isn't the version Durov described on 31 August. GRAM's chart deserves the same suspicion, because the loudest bar since listing arrived with nothing dated to explain it.
