Who Is the Biggest Owner of Bitcoin? The Largest Holders

Key Points

The biggest owner of bitcoin is thought to be Satoshi Nakamoto, at about 1.1 million BTC. Strategy had 848,517 and IBIT about 811,116 in mid-October 2026.

Nobody owns Bitcoin itself, but the biggest owner of bitcoin is thought to be Satoshi Nakamoto, with an estimated 1.1 million BTC. That's about 5.5% of the 20.10 million mined by the mid-October 2026 close. Strategy held the most of any company at 848,517 BTC and BlackRock's IBIT fund about 811,116, or 4.22% and 4.04% of that mined supply.

Satoshi's figure is an outside estimate, but Strategy and IBIT publish their own dated counts. Together these two top bitcoin holders held about 1.66 million BTC in mid-October 2026, which comes to 8.26% of the mined supply. That's also 1.51 times the 1.1 million credited to Satoshi, so the two biggest owners you can check on paper already hold half as much again as the one you can't.

Who Owns the Most Bitcoin?

Ask who holds the most bitcoins and you get two answers, an estimate and a filing. On the estimate it's Satoshi Nakamoto, whose roughly 1.1 million BTC would be 5.47% of all the coins mined by the mid-October 2026 close.

On the filings it's Strategy, the company formerly called MicroStrategy. It reported 848,517 BTC in mid-October 2026, or 4.22% of the mined supply. BlackRock's spot fund IBIT came next on its own holdings table, with about 811,116 BTC a day later or 4.04% of the same supply.

Method: each share divides a holding by the 20,100,721.875 BTC that Bitcoin's reward schedule had paid out through block 972,230, the last block found before the mid-October 2026 close. The schedule halves the block reward every 210,000 blocks, and Phemex Academy's explainer on how many bitcoins are left to mine walks through that issuance curve.

Each holder's share on this page uses that one base. It matters because a share of the 21 million cap reads lower, and Strategy's 848,517 coins come to 4.04% of the cap, the same figure IBIT reaches on the mined supply.

Is Satoshi Nakamoto the Biggest Owner of Bitcoin?

On the best-known estimate, yes, though the chain alone can't prove it. Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator is credited with about 1.1 million BTC by Sergio Demian Lerner, who traced one miner's steady pattern through Bitcoin's earliest blocks. The pattern, now known as "Patoshi", shows up in a counter inside each block's reward transaction.

Lerner's first pass in 2013 put the stash at "around 1M Bitcoins" by eye. In 2019 he wrote that "a single miner mined 22k blocks" and that "Satoshi mined close to 1.1M coins", since each of those blocks paid 50 BTC.

Not everyone accepts the attribution. The same 2019 post quotes a critic who argued the early coins "were not mined by a single party", and Lerner answered with three new arguments for a single miner.

The 50 BTC rewards of blocks 1 and 2, the first block rewards anyone could ever spend, had still never moved by the mid-October 2026 close. Satoshi's identity is a separate puzzle that no block reward can settle.

Who Owns the Most Bitcoin Besides Satoshi?

Strategy does. Its 8-K filing of mid-October 2026 put its holdings at 848,517 BTC. It paid $64.02 billion for them, an average of $75,446 a coin. That week's purchase was small, 267 BTC for $22.1 million. Nearly all of that money came from selling new shares of its common stock.

The company sells as well as buys. Its weekly 8-Ks recorded 6,948 BTC sold across five reporting windows between late May and early August 2026, and holdings fell from 847,363 BTC in late June to 840,447 in early August before new purchases lifted them back.

The early-August 2026 filing shows the last of those sales, 1,690 BTC for $108.6 million. It says plainly that "The net proceeds from the bitcoin sales were used to fund repurchases of STRC Stock", one of Strategy's preferred shares.

So the largest corporate owner of bitcoin is a buyer that can turn seller when its capital plan calls for it. Strategy wasn't alone in that, as Phemex Academy's look at why Bitcoin treasury companies are suddenly selling their coins set out in July 2026.

Which ETF Holds the Most Bitcoin?

The iShares Bitcoin Trust, ticker IBIT, holds the most. Its holdings table on the iShares site listed 811,115.58 BTC in mid-October 2026, and the page says that quantity "represents total number of bitcoins held" by the fund.

The fund's own net assets tell a slightly different story. Its $65.70 billion of net assets buys about 802,881 BTC at the fund's benchmark bitcoin price for the same day. That's about 8,234 coins fewer than the holdings table shows, a gap of 1.02% of the table's count.

iShares flags the two books itself. The page warns that its holdings data reflects "the investment book of record, which may differ from the accounting book of record" used to set net assets. Strategy stays ahead on either figure, by about 37,400 BTC on the holdings table or about 45,640 on net assets.

Which Country Owns the Most Bitcoin?

The sources here can't rank countries, because El Salvador is the only one of the three on this page that publishes a running national count. The US and UK figures below each come from a single case, and neither release adds up a country's full holdings.

The biggest single government case on this page is American. In October 2025 the Justice Department announced a civil forfeiture complaint against about 127,271 BTC, the largest forfeiture action in its history. The release says those coins "are presently in the custody of the U.S. government", but a complaint is a claim heading to court, not a final order of ownership.

Britain's largest crypto seizure case drew two guilty pleas about two weeks before that. The Metropolitan Police said in September 2025 that it had seized 61,000 Bitcoin in what was believed to be "the single largest cryptocurrency seizure in the world".

El Salvador's National Bitcoin Office keeps that count in public. Its treasury held about 7,809 BTC at the mid-October 2026 close, after adding 29 coins one at a time in the 30 days before it.

Who Actually Owns Bitcoin?

No company or government owns the network itself, and the bitcoin.org FAQ compares that to email, a technology no one owns. In practice, whoever controls the private keys for an address controls the coins in it.

That's why exchange wallets are the hardest row in any census. They can carry very large balances, but the coins in them belong to the exchange's customers. None of the filings, fund pages or agency releases cited here gives a neutral total for those coins.

Some of the oldest balances may have no reachable owner at all, because a coin whose keys are gone still shows on the ledger. The Phemex blog covers the paradox of lost bitcoins and the ways coins drop out of circulation for good.

Can You See Who Owns Bitcoin?

You can see every balance, but you usually can't see the name behind it. Bitcoin.org's privacy guide calls every transaction "public" and "traceable", and it says anyone can see the balance and all transactions of any address.

Names only attach when an owner reveals them. El Salvador runs a public treasury tracker, while Strategy's 8-K and IBIT's holdings table give totals with no wallet addresses at all. Labels on tracking sites are those sites' own attributions, so a tagged wallet tells you what a tracker believes and not what an owner has confirmed.

Large wallets draw traders' attention anyway, and Phemex Academy explains what Bitcoin whales are and why their moves get watched.

How Can You Trade Bitcoin on Phemex?

Bitcoin trades on Phemex as the BTCUSDT perpetual, which closed at 81,903.3 USDT in mid-October 2026. The contract runs up to 150x leverage and settles funding every 8 hours.

  1. Create a Phemex account and finish the identity checks it asks you for.

  2. Move USDT into your futures account, since the BTCUSDT perpetual settles in USDT.

  3. Open the BTCUSDT perpetual and choose a leverage level anywhere up to 150x.

  4. Set a stop-loss alongside your long or short order before you place it.

Futures use leverage, and a leveraged position is closed automatically if losses reach its margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we know who owns the most bitcoin?

Not with certainty, because the top name rests on an estimate. Satoshi Nakamoto's 1.1 million BTC comes from Sergio Demian Lerner's mining-pattern analysis. The largest owner with a dated filing is Strategy, which reported 848,517 BTC in mid-October 2026.

Can you see who owns bitcoin?

You can see every address and its balance on the public ledger, but not the person or company behind it. Names appear only when an owner ties itself to its coins, as El Salvador does with a public treasury tracker.

Who has the most bitcoin?

Satoshi Nakamoto does on the best-known estimate, at about 1.1 million BTC. Among holders that publish a dated count, Strategy led with 848,517 BTC in mid-October 2026, ahead of BlackRock's IBIT fund at about 811,116.

What percentage of bitcoin does the top holder own?

About 5.47% of the 20.10 million mined by the mid-October 2026 close, if Lerner's 1.1 million estimate for Satoshi holds. Strategy's 848,517 BTC is 4.22% of that mined supply.

Bottom Line

The two largest owners you can verify are closer together than their rank suggests. Strategy's lead came to about 4.6% of IBIT's holdings-table count in mid-October 2026, so fund inflows or another round of company sales could swap the order of the top two.

What stays fixed is the gap between proof and estimate. A company and a fund publish numbers you can check against a filing or a holdings table, while the name at the top of this list rests on a pattern in blocks mined in 2009 and 2010.
