Base has launched its Azul upgrade on the mainnet, introducing a new multiproof system designed to expedite withdrawals to potentially one day. The upgrade, which went live on May 28, 2026, at 18:00 UTC, marks Base's first independent upgrade since transitioning to its own stack. Azul combines Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) proofs with zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs, allowing either to finalize proposals independently, with ZK proofs able to override conflicting TEE proofs.
The upgrade also includes execution-layer changes and new Base-native clients, requiring node operators to migrate from older clients to remain in sync. Base reports significant performance improvements, including a reduction in empty blocks and transaction peaks of 5,000 TPS. Azul's multiproof design aims to enhance decentralization and security, paving the way for faster withdrawals and a more resilient network.
